Another season, another amazing Prada campaign video. Va-va-vroom.
Awards season continued last night with the 2012 Screen Actors Guild awards and, perhaps not surprisingly, the red carpet was filled with many safe dresses (see last year’s 2011 SAG awards red carpet). There were some beautiful choices, so it wasn’t a complete snoozefest, but let’s just say I’m not upset that I missed the live red carpet coverage. Here are my top five looks from the evening:
Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen - America’s newest sweetheart hasn’t done - and can’t do - any wrong in my book. While I love her bolder choices here and here, this dress looks absolutely darling on her. She works the frill and tea-length hemline, and the shoes and clutch are made for the dress (literally). I’ve been such an advocate for color on the red carpet, but I have to say this is my favorite look of the evening.

Jayma Mays in Reem Acra - Every red carpet needs a minimum of one dazzler and this Glee lady fills the void with a positively glitzy gown. While I would have loved to see this in another color (maybe emerald green or plum), there’s no doubt she looks stunning. The cut-out lace panel in the back is the icing on the cake.

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Haute Couture - Fresh off its debut, I adore this embellished drop-waist gown and it’s my favorite neutral look of the evening (once again, there were many). It’s a playful balance between elegant and edgy with studs and crystals. The only thing that seems out of place are the shoes, but to each their own.

Emily Blunt in Oscar de la Renta - Thank goodness for color! She glows in this perfectly-fitted gown. It isn’t risky by any means, but rightfully so since she is there to support her husband John Krasinski for The Office’s nominations.

Michelle Williams in Valentino - A red dress for the red carpet seems too predictable, but this gown’s asymmetrical hemline and delicate lace sleeves add a little something extra. It perfectly flatters Michelle Williams.

Ariel Winter in Collette Dinnigan - A special mention for the age-appropriate award (last year, this went to Hailee Stanfield in that fab Prada number) goes to Ariel Winter from Modern Family. Every 14-year-old girl wants to look like a princess and the bejeweled bodice and lace skirt on this confection does justice. Those coveted Miu Miu glitter pumps perfect the look too!

Recent runways have me crushing hard on the color-block trend, but the truth is that I’ve always been a pattern girl through and through. This is why British designer Matthew Williamson has a special place in my heart. Nicknamed “connoisseur of the clash”, he’s known for playful colors and patterns that can chase any blues away.
But Williamson’s latest pre-fall collection struck a different tone - a much more sophisticated and luxurious one. His patterns are paired with jewel tones, cigarette pants, lace sleeves, chevron print fur…need I say more? Matthew Williamson has distracted me from my love affair with unadulterated color-blocking and returning to my penchant for prints.

I’ve explained my love for awards season before, so I’ll cut right to the chase this time. These were the five stunners from last night’s 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards red carpet:
Claire Danes in J. Mendel - Simple elegance fit for a winner, and rightfully so, since she took the award for Best Actress in a TV Drama for her role in Homeland. When she turns around, the shimmering lattice detail and cut-out back sing the mantra: business in the front, party in the back.
Charlize Theron in Dior Couture - Hello, Hollywood siren! Plunging neck line, high slit, billowing bow, embellishment, flowing train…and somehow, it isn’t too much. She radiates glamour in this gown and Dior also proves that it can shine even without a creative director at the moment.

Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci - It goes without question that this girl is fierce (have you seen The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo?!) and she kills it in this Pre-Fall 2012 number. The tulle and bow details play up the Parisian chic that is eponymous with Nina Ricci, while the cut-outs maintain its edge. Rooney doesn’t even need to accessorize with jewelry - it’s that good.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace - It’s understood that Brangie is red carpet royalty and Angelina confirms it because this gown is everything. It fits her like a glove and the folded red accent is a sophisticated and smart touch.

Emma Stone in Lanvin - If you don’t know Emma Stone yet, then I have to assume you’re living under a rock. I kid, but her roles in Easy A, The Help, Crazy, Stupid, Love and the upcoming Spider-Man movie have nudged her into the spotlight as America’s sweetheart. She must be in the loop, since she used an eagle to belt the lovely Lanvin gown below! Brava to Emma for adding her personality to the red carpet. I adore the color combination and it’s very flattering on her.

Finally, I have to give an honorable mention to Natalie Portman in Lanvin. In a sea of nude/blush tones, the red carpet was thirsty for color and this dress is the perfect pop!
